Remotes are semi-autonomous, programmable drones. They can be remotely controlled manually or programmed for autonomous function.

Remote Control

Remotes usually have a proprietary remote control, which can operate either wireless or wired, in order to prevent hacking. An operator could send a Remote around a corner or into a dangerous area rather than risk his own skin.

Models

Remotes come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, civilian and military, small and large. Some models of Remotes are tiny, such as “action cams” that whirl around and capture their owner’s adventures. Others are driverless vehicles, or normal vehicles that also have a “remote” mode. Some ships have an “autopilot”, but due to their expense and complicated operation remote-control is usually not a good option.

Programming

Most Remotes are fully programmable, able to run autonomously when given instructions. Usually multiple programs can be installed, making them a favorite tool of Hackers to showcase their collection of odd hacks. Remotes shine in situations where the instructions are simple, such as sentry, surveillance, getaway, or area defense. Since they are not actually intelligent, they are not well-suited for active pursuit, hunting, operation in crowded areas, or unpredictable situations.

Strong AI: Sentient programs are strictly forbidden in most systems. The risk of a killing robot apocalypse is simply too great, and the benefits too few. After all, Incarnates can equal or surpass any AI, as well as being individually accountable. As a result, robots are not overly smart, and only follow programs as set forth by their masters.
